A temporary filling (dressing) is a short-term dental restoration used to protect a tooth until permanent treatment is completed. It is placed when immediate full restoration is not possible, such as after root canal therapy, during multiple treatment visits, or when monitoring a tooth’s condition. Made from soft materials like zinc oxide or glass ionomer, it seals the cavity, reduces sensitivity, prevents food and bacteria from entering, and stabilizes the tooth. Temporary fillings are not as durable as permanent ones and are designed to be replaced later with a stronger, long-lasting restoration such as a crown or composite filling.
