Root canal surgery, or apicoectomy, is a minor surgical procedure that removes the tip of a tooth’s root and surrounding infected tissue when a standard root canal fails.
It’s performed to treat persistent infection or inflammation near the root apex that doesn’t heal after initial treatment. The dentist makes a small incision in the gum to access the bone, removes the root tip, cleans the area, and seals the root end. This helps preserve the natural tooth and prevent further complications. Recovery is usually quick, with mild discomfort and swelling that subsides within a few days.
