An orthopantomogram (OPG) is a panoramic dental X-ray that provides a wide view of the upper and lower jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures.
It captures the entire mouth in a single image, including the maxilla, mandible, temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and sinus areas. Dentists use OPGs to assess tooth development, detect impacted teeth, evaluate bone health, and plan treatments such as implants or orthodontics. Unlike small intraoral X-rays, an OPG offers a comprehensive overview, making it valuable for diagnosis and treatment planning while being quick, non-invasive, and exposing patients to relatively low radiation.
