Bitewing X-rays are dental radiographs that show the crowns of the upper and lower teeth in a single view.
They are primarily used to detect cavities between teeth, monitor bone levels supporting teeth, and check for early signs of decay or gum disease. The name “bitewing” comes from the small tab patients bite on to hold the film or sensor in place during the X-ray. Unlike periapical X-rays, which capture the entire tooth including roots, bitewings focus on the visible chewing surfaces and the spaces between teeth, making them essential for routine dental checkups and preventive care.
